Well Dressing and Flower Festival 2013 and 2014.

The origins of well dressings are something of a mystery. Originally the then church banned it as water worship, but the tradition refused to die. Later, life giving water coming out of the ground was seen as a source of wonder, and evidence of Godís provision for humankind. Today this event is a thanksgiving for the gift of water.

The well associated with St Johns is "Gospel well" which supplied the chapel and adjacent cottages with water until the 1930ís. Before the chapel was built local Methodists met there for worship hence the name. It is located in a field at the top of Chapel Street/ Meadows road which runs at the side of the Sunday School building and is surrounded by a high stone wall. It is now on private land.

The annual Flower Festival  is held in conjunction with the dressing of the village wells. The theme chosen for 2013 was "Books in Bloom" and for 2014 it was "Flower Power. We hope these images convey something of the flavour of these occasions.
